PTFE vs Glass Skates.
The friction profile between your mouse and mousepad dictates your fine motor control. Modifying mouse skates (feet) is the easiest way to adjust this friction curve without replacing the mouse itself.
Static vs Dynamic Friction
To understand skate materials, you must understand the two types of friction:
- Static Friction: The force required to initiate movement from a standstill. Low static friction makes micro-adjustments easy. High static friction helps you stop on a dime.
- Dynamic Friction: The resistance felt while the mouse is already in motion. Low dynamic friction allows for effortless tracking.
PTFE (Teflon)
Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is the industry standard. However, purity matters.
- Dyed PTFE (Black): Often found on budget mice. Contains impurities that increase both static and dynamic friction.
- Virgin Grade PTFE (White): The enthusiast standard (e.g., Corepads, Tiger Ice). Offers low dynamic friction and medium-low static friction. They wear down slightly over time, which paradoxically increases surface area and slows them down slightly, providing a very consistent, controlled glide.
Aluminosilicate Glass
Glass skates (e.g., Superglides) have disrupted the market recently.
- The Benefit: Near-zero static friction. Starting a movement requires almost no force, which is incredible for tracking-heavy games (Apex Legends, Overwatch).
- The Drawback: Stopping power is virtually non-existent. You rely entirely on your hand muscles to stop the mouse, which can cause jitter when clicking on targets in tactical shooters (CS2, Valorant). Furthermore, any dust on the pad feels like grinding sand under the skates.
Warning: Never use glass skates on a glass mousepad (like a Skypad). The materials will scratch and degrade each other rapidly.
