Finding Your Sensitivity.
Copying a professional player's sensitivity is the most common mistake new PC gamers make. Sensitivity is dictated by your grip style, mousepad size, desk ergonomics, and whether you aim primarily with your wrist or your arm. You need a methodology to find what works for you.
The PSA (Perfect Sensitivity Approximation) Method
This is a tried-and-true mathematical approach to zeroing in on a comfortable sensitivity.
- Establish a Baseline: Enter an empty server. Set your sensitivity so that one full sweep of your mouse across the comfortable width of your mousepad results in exactly a 360-degree turn in-game. This is your "Base."
- Calculate High/Low bounds:
- Low = Base × 0.5
- High = Base × 1.5
- Test: Spend 5 minutes tracking a fixed point while moving around with the "Low" sensitivity, then 5 minutes with the "High." Decide which felt more comfortable (don't worry about hitting shots, focus on smoothness).
- Recalculate:
- If "Low" felt better, your new Base is the average of Low and your previous Base:
(Low + Base) / 2 - If "High" felt better, your new Base is:
(High + Base) / 2
- If "Low" felt better, your new Base is the average of Low and your previous Base:
- Repeat: Continue creating new Low/High bounds from the new Base and testing until the difference between High and Low becomes negligible.
Context Matters
A lower sensitivity (40cm+ per 360) is generally better for tactical shooters (CS2, Valorant) where crosshair placement and micro-adjustments are critical. A higher sensitivity (20-30cm per 360) is preferred for fast-paced tracking games (Apex Legends, Overwatch) where rapid target switching and verticality are common.
